Neither the BCCI nor the India Cricket Team has been fond of split coaching. India has had coaches who look after all three formats of the game. From Ravi Shastri to Rahul Dravid and now Gautam Gambhir, all the coaches will be looking after the team across both red and white ball format. But with other teams opting an alternate strategy, Jay Shah as disapproved of the move.
The BCCI Secretary has claimed that India has always good coaches who know how to effectively lead the side. Furthermore, he claimed that since the team remains a single unit, the bonding high and thus they perform well to become one of the best teams in the country.

“India plays non-stop cricket. We have good bench strength of coaches. When Rahul bhai was the coach and he wanted to rest, VVS Laxman would go as the coach. India is the only team that travels everywhere. The benefit we get from that is that our relations with other boards gets stronger and the economy of the other country improves because of India. That’s why we get 40 % share (in revenues from the ICC) but in turn, the other countries, too earn,” Jay Shah told the Times of India.
No Spilt coaching for India?
“It depends on the coach we have picked. Gautam Gambhir was interested in all three formats, then who I am to tell him that I am going to pick you only for this format. If you look at the makeup of the Test, T20 and ODI sides, 70 % of the team is more less the same. Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Jadeja… pre T20 WC, we had Rohit and Virat. How will the players bond with different coaches?,” Jay Shah added.
Teams like England and Pakistan have instilled a spilt coaching job. While India now will have split captaincy after Rohit Sharma‘s retirement from T20Is, split coaching is out of the question. Jay Shah argued that if there are different coaches, then the bonding of the team will be disrupted.
This is mainly owing to the fact that India’s core setup remains the same. The Men in Blue are one of the only teams in the world that has the most multi-format players in the roster. Shah claims that 70% of the players in the team plays all three formats of the game and travels together. Thus, the inclusion of split coaching will greatly disrupt the harmony of the side.
