Former Australia captain Steve Smith is eyeing to make a comeback to the Indian Premier League (IPL) after sitting out for three years. The prolific batter has gone unsold in the auction over the last few years, with teams ignoring the star. Now, Smith has confirmed that he will be putting his name in the mega auction that is set to take place later this year.
Steve Smith wants to return to IPL
As per CODE Sports, Smith’s recent performances in the MLC 2024 reignited his desire to pursue his future in franchise cricket. The Australian batter made his IPL debut in 2010 and has played for multiple franchises including RCB, KTK, RR and RPSG.
“I’d love to be part of the IPL once again. I’ll be putting my name in the auction,” Smith told CODE Sports.
Steve Smith signed up for the Washington Freedom team in the MLC. He not only guided the side to their first ever title win but also was the third highest run-scorer in the tournament. He was left out of Australia’s T20 World Cup squad prior to the MLC and was on commentator duty instead.
In IPL, Smith has 2485 runs from 103 matches, which includes one hundred and 11 fifties. His last IPL season, in 2021, saw him struggle as he managed to amass just 152 runs from 8 games.
