When the Indian management decided to release Dhruv Jurel, you knew that Ishan Kishan would be in trouble. The southpaw, who’d decided to skip participating in the domestic season earlier in the year, has been trying hard to make his way back to the Indian cricket team. The BCCI had already directed him and others that the only pathway was success in domestic cricket. 

Gaikwad picks Jurel-Khaleel ahead of Kishan-Prasidh

He’d started his comeback trail in the Buchi Babu tournament and then scored a hundred in the Duleep Trophy 2024 and was subsequently named in ROI’s squad. However, Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir’s decision to give match time to Jurel, India’s 2nd choice wicketkeeper behind Rishabh Pant, has led to Kishan sitting out in the Mumbai vs ROI match in the Irani Cup 2024.

ROI’s Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad had no choice but to play Jurel over Kishan in what is a stacked 15-member squad. Prasidh Krishna, another capped Team India player, wasn’t picked either and Khaleel Ahmed was selected despite another left-arm pacer in Yash Dayal present.

Ishan Kishan’s trail by non-selection

In three days, Kishan has faced disappointment twice. On September 28, he didn’t make India’s squad for the India vs Bangladesh T20I series and now can’t find a place in ROI’s starting XI. This one seems reasonable because Jurel has been part of India’s Test setup since the England Test series earlier in the year. But to lose out to Jitesh Sharma, someone who hasn’t played for Team India since January and hasn’t particularly well since then will sting him.
